Convex Hull

Purpose

Convex Hull tool allows building convex and detailed hulls for features of any geometry type (polygons, polylines, points and multipoints).

Description

The Convex Hull tool is meant for building convex and detailed hulls for point, polyline, polygon, and multipoint features. Detailed hulls are hulls of a more detailed shape. As a result, a new hull polygon dataset will be created. If grouping fields are selected to build a hull, then multiple hulls will be created for defined groups of features.

In those cases when input data include only one or two points and consequently it is impossible to build a polygon hull for these features (as building a polygon requires at least three points), hulls with empty geometry will be created.

Building Convex Hulls

  1. Select the "Convex Hull" tool from the XTools Pro menu.

  2. Select the input layer containing features that you wish to build a hull for.

  3. Specify the name and location of the output hull feature class.

  4. Select the Group by field if you wish to create multiple hulls for groups of features.

  5. Specify level of details selecting between 0% (this is for a Convex hull) and 100% (all values greater than 0 will result in a Detailed hull of different level of detail).

  6. Specify buffer if required (negative buffers allowed).

  7. Press Run to build the hull.
